Medical Grade Skin Care
in Tunbridge Wells, Kent
What is medical grade skin care?
Medical grade skin care is a collection of products containing active ingredients such as Vitamin A derivatives (retinol, retinoids), pigmentation-reducers, antioxidants and other skin nutrients. It has higher concentrations of active ingredients than over the counter skin care. The products are designed to improve skin health, texture, tone and pigmentation. They can also reduce fine lines and treat some types of acne. Some products are available on prescription only.
Who is suitable for medical grade skin care?
If you are concerned by fine lines, dull skin, sun damaged skin, ageing skin, uneven pigmentation, the texture or tone of your skin, you may be suitable for medical grade skin care. Along with not smoking and protecting your skin from the sun, targeted skin care is the first line of facial rejuvenation treatments and complements the results of all facial rejuvenation treatments.
Caution!
If you are very tanned, have a dark skin pigmentation type, pregnant, breast-feeding or have significant health problems, this will need to be assessed and you may be advised to wait or not to have medical grade skin care or not to use some of the products.
The treatment
There are variations depending on your individual anatomy and goals. The standard treatment is a 6 to 12 week course of more intensive skin care followed by less intensive maintenance treatment as your routine skin care. The key is to view this as long term care of your skin rather than one-off usage of a product.

The Difference Expertise Makes
Combination treatment
Medical grade skin care can be used on its own or in combination with other procedures. Common combinations include wrinkle reduction treatments, dermal fillers, facial peels and to maintain or enhance the results of facial rejuvenation surgery such as facelifts.
Duration of treatment
A minimum of 6 weeks treatment is needed to see any significant change in your skin and usually a 12-week course is recommended followed by a suitable maintenance regime for your skin type. Skin cell cycles are around 120 days so shorter courses do not usually have much effect.
During & after treatment
You will need to protect your skin from the sun if using many of the ingredients in medical grade skin care ranges.
Recovery
There is no downtime as such associated with using medical grade skin care. But some products require careful protection from sun exposure during and immediately after their use and some products can cause irritation, redness and flaking as part of their mechanism of action.
Complications
Unfortunately, complications can occur after all treatments and you need to be aware of this. Ms Nugent will do her utmost to reduce your risk as much as she can. This includes the health and procedure advice she gives you before surgery, the care and precautions she takes during the treatment and the advice she gives you after the treatment. Some of the complications that can happen include infection, scarring, under-treatment, over-treatment, hypopigmentation, demarcation between treated and untreated areas, allergic reaction.
Successful treatment
Most patients who undertake a medical grade skin care treatment programme are very pleased with their results and say that it significantly improved the appearance of their skin. Success depends on being prepared for your treatment, choosing the right products, the treatment itself and your skin type. All steps in the journey are crucial!
