What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are gel substances used to plump out, contour or augment facial features. Hyaluronic acid fillers are the most commonly used dermal fillers.
Who is suitable for dermal fillers?
If you are concerned by loss of volume and fine lines and wrinkles on your face particularly in your cheeks, lips, chin, jawline or temple (other areas can be treated too), you may be suitable for dermal fillers. Subtle lift effects, lip, cheek and chin augmentation and nose reshaping can also be achieved by dermal fillers.
Caution!
If you are pregnant, on blood-thinning medication or have significant health problems, this will need to be assessed and you may be advised to wait or not to have dermal fillers.
The treatment
There are variations depending on your individual anatomy and goals. The standard treatment is carried out in the office placing a series of tiny injections into targeted areas and layers of your face. The amount of dermal filler used is bespoke to your individual requirements and anatomy. If you are looking for large volume dermal filler treatment, you may be advised to have your treatment in stages.

Combination treatment
Dermal filler treatments can be done on their own or in combination with other procedures. Common combinations include wrinkle reduction treatments, facial peels and to maintain or enhance the results of facial rejuvenation surgery such as facelift or blepharoplasty.
Duration of treatment
15 to 30 minutes depending on the areas treated. If other procedures are planned at the same time, the overall treatment time is longer.
After treatment
You may be advised to massaging the areas treated. This will depend on the particular treatment that you have had. Afterwards you can wear make-up and wash your face as normal.
Recovery
No time off work is usually needed. The injection sites may be tender to touch for a few days. A small group of people experience swelling and bruising at the treatment sites. The effect is immediate, but the treated areas will swell a little afterwards. The full effects should be stable at 2 weeks. Treatments last between 6 and 18 months. To maintain a steady effect, regular treatments are recommended.
Complications
Unfortunately, complications can occur after all treatments and you need to be aware of this. Ms Nugent will do her utmost to reduce your risk as much as she can. This includes the health and procedure advice she gives you before treatment, the care and precautions she takes during the treatment and the advice she gives you after the treatment. Some of the complications that can happen include tender injection sites, infection, bleeding, severe bruising, asymmetry, nodules, visibility of the filler through thin skin, over-treatment, under-treatment, allergic reaction, skin necrosis (loss), blindness (very rare).
Successful treatment
Most patients who undergo dermal filler treatment are very pleased with their results and say that it significantly improved the treated area. Success depends on being prepared for your treatment, choosing the right procedure, the treatment itself and recovering well. All steps in the journey are crucial!
