What is a Deep Plane Facelift?

You may be familiar with traditional facelift surgery, which aims to target sagging tissues and restore youthful contours to the face, reversing signs of ageing. There are many techniques a plastic surgeon might select from in approaching facial surgery, and the deep plane facelift is one such technique.

A standard facelift (or rhytidectomy) accesses a layer of connective tissue under the skin called the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system). This layer connects the skin to the underlying facial muscles and helps to support and define the face. There are multiple SMAS facelift techniques, such as plication (folding and restitching the SMAS) and imbrication (overlapping the SMAS). These methods suspend the soft tissues and often provide excellent results for patients looking for moderate improvement in facial ageing.

The deep plane facelifting technique allows access to the deeper structures of the face, below the SMAS layer. A major difference in the deep plane approach is the full release of ligaments. By cutting the ligaments connecting the bone to the skin, the SMAS layer can be manipulated more effectively. This allows for more profound lifting and longer-lasting, more natural-looking results.

What Are the Benefits of a Deep Plane Facelift?

A deep plane facelift offers a more powerful approach to the ageing face. This technique is known to preserve the essence of a person’s facial features. Because of the deeper access and ligamentous release, a deep plane facelift not only addresses the lower face, as a traditional facelift does, but the midface as well.

As a result, benefits include:

  • Softer, minimised appearance of nasolabial folds and marionette lines
  • Lifted and enhanced cheekbones
  • A more defined jawline
  • Natural-looking results with no “windblown” effect
  • Longer-lasting results compared to traditional facelifts
  • Comprehensive rejuvenation of wrinkles, skin laxity, and volume loss
  • Excellent healing with minimal skin tension, thanks to deep structural support

Am I a Candidate for a Deep Plane Facelift?

Ideal candidates are patients looking for the most dramatic, long-lasting, and natural results. If you wish to address sagging in the midface and perhaps even look like your younger self, this may be the facelift technique for you.

Candidates should be in good health, not smoke, and have realistic expectations for their outcome.

How Is a Deep Plane Facelift Performed?

A deep plane facelift is performed under general anaesthesia.

Ms Nugent makes carefully placed incisions behind the ears and hidden in or along the hairline. With her deep understanding of facial anatomy, she can access and release the zygomatic, mandibular, masseter, and cervical retaining ligaments. This releases the SMAS layer, allowing for it to be shifted back up into a youthful position. The SMAS can also be repositioned laterally to improve nasolabial folds significantly.

When all looks well, Ms Nugent will anchor the SMAS down closer to the ear, tailor the skin in place, and remove excess skin and SMAS tissue. Finally, she closes the incisions with artful sutures, creating a natural facial appearance.

Ms Nugent can also make a submental incision (below the chin) to lift the platysma muscle. In fact, a deep neck lift which also addresses deep neck fat and enlarged or sagging submandibular salivary glands is an excellent complement to a deep facelift for seamless neck and facial rejuvenation.

What Is Deep Plane Facelift Recovery Like?

Deep plane facelift surgery is a day case procedure although some patients choose to stay overnight. After a monitoring period, you will be released to a trusted driver to be taken home. Ms Nugent will provide you with instructions for post-operative care; follow these closely to ensure optimal healing. You will also have a series of scheduled appointments with experienced nurses and Ms Nugent to review progress. It is highly recommended to enlist the help of a friend, family member, or care companion for at least the first week or two.

Bruising and swelling are common in the first few days to weeks following surgery. After about two weeks, many patients feel comfortable going out in public. After three weeks, many patients can return to working at a desk and resume the use of cosmetics. Heavy lifting and strenuous activities are prohibited for six weeks. Driving is not permitted until you can safely perform an emergency stop.

What Results Can I Expect From a Deep Plane Facelift?

A deep plane facelift involves a longer recovery than a traditional facelift, but the results are well worth it. As bruising and swelling resolve in the initial days and weeks, your final results will become more apparent, and you can begin to enjoy your fresh, youthful appearance.

It can take six months for complete healing to take place, including the return of sensation to the face. Still, after a few short weeks, your face will be visibly refreshed, with smoother, more youthful contours on display.

The results of a deep plane facelift are long-lasting. It’s vital to maintain them with proper skincare, a healthy lifestyle, and daily sun protection for best results.

How Much Is a Deep Plane Facelift in the UK?

The cost of a deep plane facelift varies from patient to patient. Additionally, factors such as combination procedures, anaesthesia fees, and other considerations can affect the final cost of your procedure.

The best way to obtain an accurate figure for how much a deep plan facelift costs is to schedule a consultation. At your appointment, Ms Nugent can answer your questions and provide you with a personalised quote based on your treatment plan.
