What is a midface lift?

A midface lift is a lift procedure of the lower eyelid and cheek area which helps rejuvenate and refresh your lower eyelid, mid-face and cheek area or your central face.

Who is suitable for a midface lift?

If you are concerned by excess skin or ‘bags’ of your lower eyelid as well as sagging or loss of volume in your mid-face or cheek area and deep lines between your cheek and upper lip, you may be suitable for a midface lift.

Caution!

If you smoke, are on blood-thinning medication, have medical eye conditions or high blood pressure or have significant health problems, this will need to be assessed and you may be advised to wait or not to have a midface lift.

The procedure

There are variations depending on your individual anatomy and goals. The standard surgery is done under local anaesthesia and sedation or general anaesthesia depending on the extent of change needed. Skin incisions are placed as discretely as possible in the natural line just under your lower eyelid eyelashes (similar to a lower blepharoplasty). If needed, the underlying fat is repositioned, or small amounts removed. Sometimes very fine layers of fat are added. The tissues of your cheek and central face are lifted and secured in a more youthful position. Excess skin is removed. Sometimes additional support sutures are needed at the outer part of your lower eyelid. Drains are not routinely used. Stitches will need to be removed 5 to 7 days later.

Combination surgery

Midface lift can be done on its own or in combination with other procedures. Common combinations include lower blepharoplasty, upper blepharoplasty, brow lift, facelifts and other facial rejuvenation procedures.

Duration of surgery

1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on the extent of surgery. If other procedures are planned at the same time, the overall surgery time is longer.

After surgery

You will have tapes on the incisions on your eyelids. Midface lift is a day case procedure although some people may stay in hospital overnight. You are advised to use lubricating eyedrops regularly. You can shower with care after 48 hours.

Recovery

On average 2 weeks off work are needed. No heavy lifting or strenuous activity is allowed for 6 weeks. Reduce bending and stooping as much as possible and sleep on extra pillows at night to help reduce swelling. Some forms of exercise can be restarted at 4 weeks. Most exercise is restarted at 6 weeks. Driving is not allowed until you are safe to perform an emergency stop.

Complications

Unfortunately, complications can occur after all surgery and you need to be aware of this. Ms Nugent will do her utmost to reduce your risk as much as she can. This includes the health and procedure advice she gives you before surgery, the care and precautions she takes during surgery and the advice she gives you after surgery. Some of the complications that can happen include slow healing, infection, bleeding, poor scarring, asymmetry, pain, numbness or sensitivity in the skin, dry eyes, watery eyes, seroma (fluid build-up), weakness of eyelid movement, weakness of upper lip movement, recurrence of mid-face sagging, poor eyelid position (ectropion), double vision (very rare), blindness (very rare).

Successful surgery

Most patients who undergo midface lift surgery are very happy with their results and find that it really rejuvenates and refreshes their lower eyelid, cheek and central facial appearance. Success depends on being prepared for your surgery, choosing the right procedure, the surgery itself and recovering well. All steps in the journey are crucial!
